The goal of the FCPN is to provide an alternative distribution infrastructure for the Free Software Movement. The alternative distribution model FCPN is attempting to implement is based in the use of peer to peer technology. Our model will reduce centralized bandwidth and disk costs, reduce the impact of the slashdot effect when new releases are made, use public key cryptography for the security of the distribution model, and rely on complete decentralization to greatly minimize the impact of physical or financial failures. Secondary benefits will include the reduced reliance and corporate or government sponsorship of freesoftware distributors and developers and a greatly reduced "barrier to entry" for new free software products with significant bandwidth needs such as linux distributions. The end result of the FCPN development will be easy, reliable and secure peer to peer access to the latest free software technology.
